Photo Exhibition: ‘The Indian Chapter in Korean War’

Embassy of India, Seoul in  partnership with the Ministry of Patriots & Veterans Affairs  and War Memorial of Korea is organizing a photo exhibition on India’s Humanitarian Assistance during the Korean War at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul.

At the inauguration ceremony on March 3, 2022, H.E. Mr. Hwang Ki-Chul, Minister MPVA will be the Chief Guest. Other important dignitaries from ROK Government, National Assembly, Think-tanks, journalists etc will grace the occasion.

During the Korean War of 1950, India supported the UN Security Council Resolutions and deployed a medical unit “60 Para Field Ambulance”, commanded by Korean War Hero Lieutenant Colonel A.G. Rangaraj, that provided medical support  and treated over 222,000 patients including civilians during the Korean War. The unit earned numerous awards and appreciation from the Government of ROK, United Nations and other agencies for its efforts.

This apart, the contribution made by India in resolving the complex Prisoner of War(POW) issues and thus facilitating the Armstice, appear not to be well known. India was selected to head the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission(NNRC) and supervise the exchange of POWs under the chairmanship of Lieutenant General KS Thimmaya. The Custodian Forces-India comprising 5230 personnel came to Korea, under Major General SSP Thorat to look after the complex and sensitive issue of repatriation of over 25,000 POWs.

Through this exhibition, we seek to honour the soldiers, many of whom had laid their lives for the restoration of peace on the Korean peninsula and for India’s friendship with ROK.

The exhibition is open to the public from February 25, 2022 till June 22, 2022.
